Body Technology was an algorithmic dance performance exploring biological and digital technologies.
I began with an interest in diverse neural, sensate, and mechanical structures, and in what technologies were "running" inside my own body. After reading a research paper by WeBuildAI on
"A Participatory Framework for Collective Governance," I broke down their step-by-step process and drew an analog algorithm (left) that could structure performance.
Using this algorithm, I cast dancers and conducted movement exercises and interviews, identifying biological technologies of collective interest. As a group, we settled on the following technologies: intuition, rooting, signaling, sound recording, adaptation, proprioception, and conversion of food into nutrients.
In workshops, dancers explored conditons under which their various technologies ran smoothly, broke down, or otherwise pulsed, glitched, or erred. Together and with the support of choreographer Lu Donovan, we developed phrases for the final performance.
